Conditional Format

Definition

With conditional format you can specify a certain format. For example if the cell is empty, then make it blue with a border and italic. You can put any logical test in conditional format

Where to find conditional formatting

Go to HOME > CONDITIONAL FORMAT. The following screen will show

Excel 2007 have more uses that 2003 for conditional formatting. Most of these options are self explanatory.

Example

We want a colour if the following data is less than 1000.

Select the numbers where you want to apply the conditional formatting. Go to conditional formatting and go to “Highlight cell rules” and the “less than”. The following will pop up

Change the number to 1000. The result will be as follows:

There is alot of options under conditional formatting, so go and play around there.

Troubleshooting

The most common problems are as follows:

  • When you click on a cell to include on your formula, the conditional formatting fixes the cells and columns automatically. When you then copy this, all the formula reference back to the same cell.
  • The only to copy a conditional formatting is to copy the cell and then go into paste special. Select the formatting option to only copy the formatting
